Will win/should win: 2014 Emmys edition

this is my first time doing this as a full-time employee in the entertainment industry, so i feel like i may have a better grasp of the politics of these things

Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series

  • Will win: Robin Wright, House of Cards
  • Should win: No one, because Tatiana Maslany kicks everyone’s ass. She should be winning by a landslide; it’s beyond infuriating that she isn’t even nominated.

Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series

  • Will win and should win: Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Veep. This woman was born to play this role.

Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series

  • Will win: Matthew McConaughey, True Detective
  • Should win: While I would like to say Bryan Cranston for the masterpiece that is Breaking Bad's final season, McConaughey knocked this one out of the park.

Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series

  • Will win: Jim Parsons, The Big Bang Theory
  • Should win: Louis C.K., Louie

Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series

  • Will win and should win: Anna Gunn, Breaking Bad

Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series

  • Will win and should win: Kate Mulgrew, Orange is the New Black

Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series

  • Will win: Aaron Paul, Breaking Bad
  • Should win: Peter Dinklage, Game of Thrones. Because, come on: Tyrion’s trial? No competition.

Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series

  • Will win: Andre Braugher, Brooklyn Nine-Nine
  • Should win: Tony Hale, Veep

Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series

  • Will win and should win: Breaking Bad, “Ozymandias,” written by Moira Walley-Beckett

Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series

  • Will win and should win: Veep, “Special Relationship,” written by Simon Blackwell, Tony Roche, and Armando Ianucci (I hope I’m right here, considering it’s likely that Orange is the New Black will take the comedy series category, and Veep needs to be recognized somewhere.)

Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series

  • Will win and should win: True Detective, “Who Goes There,” directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga (like Gravity at last year’s Oscars, True Detective will likely be recognized in the directing category rather than the series category)

Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series

  • Will win and should win: Orange is the New Black, “Lesbian Request Denied,” directed by Jodie Foster

Outstanding Drama Series

  • Will win: Breaking Bad
  • Should win: I want to say Game of Thrones so badly, but I can’t. Breaking Bad, obviously.

Outstanding Comedy Series

  • Will win: Orange is the New Black
  • Should win: Veep. I love OITNB as much as the next human, but it is not a comedy. It’s not really a drama either, which is why this category is so tricky. But Veep is consistently beyond excellent in all categories, and it is pure, brilliant comedy.

I’m refraining from the miniseries/TV movie categories because I haven’t seen enough of them, but it’s likely that The Normal Heart will take Outstanding Lead Actor (Mark Ruffalo), Outstanding Supporting Actor (Matt Bomer), Outstanding Writing (although this should go to Steven Moffat for Sherlock: His Last Vow), Outstanding Directing (Ryan Murphy), and Outstanding Miniseries/TV movie.
